Einen Tag später las ich dann dieses lange Gespräch zwischen Giovanni di Lorenzo, Chefredaktor der “Zeit” und Frank Schirrmacher, Herausgeber der FAZ. Ich war einigermassen überrascht darüber, mit wie vielen Punkten der beiden intellektuellen Schwergewichte alter Schule ich einverstanden war. Neben den obligaten Piraten und dem Journalismus im Allgemeinen kam dabei auch zur Sprache, welche Folgen die zunehmende Vernetzung – zu deren Effekten neben dem Instant-Feedback auch ein zunehmender Anspruch auf komplette Transparenz gehört – für das Mediensystem und daraus folgend auch für die Politik hat. Dabei stachen mir insbesondere zwei der Aussagen ins Auge:

Schirrmacher: “Online hat dieses automatische Feedback, das wie ein Plebiszit wirkt. Im Fall Sarrazin haben wir das dramatisch erlebt. Sein Buch erschien, und sofort kamen Leserkommentare: »Wieso, das Buch ist doch in Ordnung?« Und plötzlich sind auch die Medien umgeschwenkt.”

und an anderer Stelle:

Di Lorenzo: “Das ist wohl die größte Angst eines jeden, der heute ein öffentliches Amt bekleidet oder bekleiden will: dass sein Leben komplett durchleuchtet wird. Das ist heute viel einfacher als früher, und bei fast jedem, der für irgendetwas Verantwortung übernommen hat, lässt sich privat oder beruflich etwas finden, das gegen ihn verwendet werden kann. Alles wird in eine Richtung interpretiert, bis dann die nächste Sau durchs Dorf getrieben wird.”

Es scheint mir eminent wichtig, dass sich die Gesellschaft mit solchen Fragen auseinander setzt – und das besser heute als morgen. Deshalb: Unbedingt lesen und ein paar Minuten darüber nachdenken, was diese Herren hier besprechen.

Who is going to focus real, prolonged attention on any of the big, dry, disturbing stuff when every day, we can play with the farts and foibles of celebrity and near-celebrity.  The last twenty years has seen a great divestment in journalists who once covered issues – well-trained and committed men and women who might have, say, spent careers charting trends in criminal law and their effect, or who might be writing critical pieces about the rates of incarceration and what they’ve done to urban America.  The bodies that once did such things – or at least harbored ambitions in that direction — now don’t see the actual street.  Instead, they go to cubicles and snatch pieces of celebrity froth and mock outrage off one website, add a fresh witticism and repost.  Then they fire off another 140 characters or so alerting you to the fact that they’ve reposted.   There’s a real future in that, apparently.  Some even call it journalism.

Ob diese App aus technischer Perspektive das Zeug hat, Aggregator-Platzhirsche wie Flipboard oder Zite von den Home Screens dieser Welt zu verdrängen, sollen andere beurteilen. Was mir selbst beim ersten Ausprobieren am stärksten auffiel, war vor allem ein kleines Detail. Es macht deutlich, mit welcher Entschlossenheit Google sein soziales Netzwerk in den Markt drücken will. Wer spannende Artikel aus Currents mit seinem Netzwerk teilen möchte, tut dies wie gewohnt über einen Sharing-Button. Das einfache Antippen desselben gibt dem User aber statt einer kompletten Liste mit entsprechenden Services erst einmal nur Google+ und Email zur Auswahl. Erst ein erneuter Tap auf “More…” bringt Standards wie Facebook, Twitter oder Tumblr zum Vorschein – aus UX-Perspektive eine eher suboptimale Lösung. Aber darum geht es hier offensichtlich nicht. Vielmehr zeigt sich darin einmal mehr die grosse Strategie von Neo-CEO Larry Page, Google+ als “Unifying Layer” über die bisher als einzelne Produkte unabhängig voneinander existierenden Dienste von Google zu ziehen.

Damit bewegt sich der Konzern auch auf einer strategischen Ebene in Richtung Facebook, das mittlerweile ebenfalls eine unglaubliche Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Diensten anbietet, diese aber so geschickt verknüpft, dass das Publikum sie als Features eines einzigen Produktes wahr nimmt. Das macht durchaus Sinn, bündelt es doch die Kräfte und vereinfacht das Marketing ungemein. Aber: Wenn eine solch grundlegende Änderung des bisher auf modularer Freiwilligkeit beruhenden Dienstleistungsangebots von Google auf Biegen und Brechen durchgedrückt wird, wirkt das alles ein wenig unsympathisch und ja, auch verzweifelt. Insbesondere, wenn dabei bewusst Kollateralschäden im Bereich UX in Kauf genommen werden. Meilenweit entfernt davon, was Google ursprünglich gross gemacht hat: Das Selbstbewusstsein einen so überragend guten Service anzubieten, dass er sich von selbst verkauft.

When people write critically about Facebook, they often say that “you are the product being sold,” but I think that by now we all get that. So we build our little content farms within, friending and upthumbing, learning to accept that our new landlords are people who grew up on Power Rangers. Tens of millions of people made a decision to spend their time with the simple, mobile photo-sharing application that was not Facebook because they liked its subtle interface and little filters. And so Facebook bought the thing that is hardest to fake. It bought sincerity.

Until recently, many Internet critics have feared that such personalization of the Internet may usher in a world in which we see only articles that reflect our existent interests and never venture outside of our comfort zones. Social media, with its never-ending flurry of links and mini-debates, have made some of these concerns obsolete. But the rise of “automated journalism” may eventually present a new and different challenge, one that the excellent discovery mechanisms of social media cannot solve yet: What if we click on the same link that, in theory, leads to the same article but end up reading very different texts?How will it work? Imagine that my online history suggests that I hold an advanced degree and that I spend a lot of time on the websites of the Economist or the New York Review of Books; as a result, I get to see a more sophisticated, challenging, and informative version of the same story than my USA Today-reading neighbor. If one can infer that Im also interested in international news and global justice, a computer-generated news article about Angelina Jolie might end by mentioning her new film about the war in Bosnia. My celebrity-obsessed neighbor, on the other hand, would see the same story end with some useless gossipy tidbit about Brad Pitt.
